The playwright:
He has been called the "elusive cowboy of American theatre," and is widely considered to be among Americas finest living playwrights. Few American playwrights have exerted as much influence on the contemporary stage as Sam Shepard. His plays are performed on and off Broadway and in all the major regional American theatres and widely across Europe. He has written over forty plays, and yet he is probably best known to the public for his many roles on film. Sam Shepard truly is an icon of the modern theatre.
The play:
Buried Child, the play that launched Shepards fame as a dramatist, and for which he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1979, remains as powerful, funny and scathing a commentary on the dysfunctional American family, as it was when it was first produced a recent Broadway production was nominated for two Tony Awards.
The Story:
Set on a run down farm in the Midwest, the play revolves around the unannounced homecoming of a long lost grandson. Vincent brings his girlfriend home to meet his folks the only problem is that the folks dont know who he is and the Norman Rockwell exterior of his grandparents farmhouse belies the disintegration of the family within and the terrible secret theyre hiding.
"[Buried Child is a] mesmerizing Midwest Gothic comedy filled with the blackest of humor... a horrific yet hilarious journey into a world where blood is thicker than water -- and freely spilled. "
- Michael Kuchwara, Associated Press
"[Sam Shepard is] one of the most original, prolific and gifted dramatists at work today."
- The New Yorker
